Frequently asked questions about submersible pumps

Where are submersible pumps used?

Where the pump has to work directly in the liquid: boreholes, tanks and sumps, process baths, treatment facilities, dewatering. The submersible design removes the suction problem — the pump is always flooded and does not need priming before start-up.

Why is the minimum liquid level important?

Because the motor of a submersible pump is cooled by the liquid itself. If the level drops below the permissible one, the motor overheats and fails. The minimum level is specified by the manufacturer and is monitored by a float or a level sensor — this is a mandatory element of correct installation.

What about the tightness of the motor and the cable?

The motor is protected by a double seal with an oil chamber between the seals, and the cable entry is made leak-tight. The cable must not be extended in a makeshift way in the flooded zone — splicing is done with a leak-tight coupling, or a cable of the required length is taken from the outset.

Does such a pump withstand abrasives and solid particles?

It depends on the version. For clean water standard versions are used, for effluents with inclusions — versions with an appropriate free passage or with a cutting mechanism, for abrasive media — submersible slurry pumps with wear-resistant wet-end materials.

How can installation be arranged so that the pump does not have to be lifted out by hand?

Permanent installation is done on a pipe auto-coupling: the pump is lowered along guide rails and self-seals on the discharge connection, and a chain is enough to lift it. This is the standard solution for sumps and pumping stations — servicing does not require personnel to descend into the chamber.
