Frequently asked questions about impeller pumps

How does an impeller pump work?

An elastic impeller with flexible vanes rotates inside the casing. The vanes are deformed against the eccentric profile of the casing, forming chambers of variable volume — this is how the pump creates a vacuum and moves the product. Thanks to this it is self-priming and can lift liquid from a lower level.

How gently does it handle the product?

Very gently — this is one of the reasons for its popularity in food production and in winemaking. The pump transfers wine with pomace, must, beer, dairy products, ready meals and minced meat without whipping, oxidation or grinding of the inclusions.

How is the impeller material chosen?

According to the product and the temperature: NBR — for neutral food media and fats, EPDM — for hot water and cleaning solutions, FKM — for more aggressive media. An incorrectly chosen elastomer swells or hardens, so the composition of the product must be known before the selection.

What will happen if the pump runs without liquid?

This is the main cause of impeller failure: without lubrication by liquid the vanes overheat and tear within tens of seconds. That is why the pump must not be left switched on with an empty line, and in stationary applications a product presence monitor is installed.

How complicated is replacing the impeller?

This is a simple operation: the casing cover is removed, the impeller is pulled out and replaced with a new one, without special tools and without dismantling the pump from the line. The impeller is a planned consumable part; we keep them in supply for specific models.
