ProMinent alpha and Sigma motor-driven metering pump

The ProMinent motor-driven metering pump is a diaphragm pump with an electric motor for metering chemicals in the medium flow range. The group includes eight models: alpha, Sigma Basic (S1Ba, S2Ba, S3Ba), Sigma X Control (S1Cb, S2Cb, S3Cb) and sigma Hygienic. Flow rate: 1.0 to 1,040 l/h; back pressure: up to 16 bar.

Why does the ProMinent motor-driven metering pump hold its flow rate when pressure fluctuates?

A worm gear reduces the motor speed, and a cam converts the rotation into a linear stroke. A push rod transmits the stroke to the diaphragm. This kinematics produces a rigid characteristic curve: the flow rate depends little on back-pressure fluctuations. The flow rate is changed by stroke length and motor speed. This makes the pump easy to integrate into an automated process.

The choice between series depends on control. Basic is adjusted manually. Control receives signals from the control system. alpha is designed for simple low-flow tasks.

What ensures safety in Sigma pumps?

• Multi-layer safety diaphragm. If the diaphragm ruptures, the chemical does not escape to the outside or enter the drive. The rupture is shown on an indicator; optionally, a signal is sent via a contact.
• Integrated relief valve. Protects the pump against overload, while the bleed valve assists during priming.
• Accuracy. In the Sigma/1 Basic, the stroke length is adjusted in 1 % increments; metering accuracy is better than ±1 %.
• Materials. Dosing heads made of PVDF, stainless steel 1.4404 or carbon-filled PTFE.

Sigma is supplied with drives for ATEX zones, with a left-hand liquid end, and in food-grade versions compliant with Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, FDA or Hygienic Design.

How do alpha, Sigma Control and sigma Hygienic differ?

• alpha — the stroke length is changed in 10 % increments with the pump stopped. Dosing heads made of PP, clear acrylic or PVDF; motor 230 V, 50 W.
• Sigma X Control is controlled via potential-free contacts, a 0/4–20 mA signal or in batch mode. It has a PROFIBUS® interface and a log book for 300 events.
• sigma Hygienic has minimal dead space, smooth surfaces and no shaft passage into the product chamber. It supports CIP cleaning and PROFIBUS® and CANopen interfaces.

Where is the ProMinent motor-driven metering pump used?

The manufacturer lists the following tasks: metering chemicals at flow rates up to 1,040 l/h, disinfecting drinking water and cooling circuits, flocculants in wastewater treatment, and additives in the paper industry and plastics production. sigma Hygienic is used in food production — for equipment cleaning, see “CIP cleaning of equipment”.

For flow rates up to 80 l/h, use gamma solenoid-driven pumps. For flow rates up to 2,100 l/h — MAKRO TZMb from the group of process diaphragm pumps. For pressures above 16 bar — hydraulic diaphragm pumps.
