What is a split-case pump?
It is a centrifugal pump whose casing is split along a plane through the shaft axis. The upper half of the casing can be removed to gain access to the rotor, the impeller and the bearings without dismantling the pipework or removing the motor from the baseplate.
What is the main advantage of such a design?
Maintenance. Inspection and replacement of worn components take many times less time than on a pump of conventional layout, while the pipework and the alignment with the motor remain untouched. At high flow rates, where dismantling the pump is a separate operation involving a crane, this is the decisive factor.
Where are such pumps used?
At high flow rates: trunk and municipal water supply, pumping stations, cooling systems at power and industrial facilities, irrigation, fire-fighting systems, circulation circuits of large plants.
What impeller is used in them?
Mostly a double-suction impeller: the flow enters from both sides, which balances the axial thrust and unloads the bearings. That is precisely why such pumps run steadily at high flow rates and have a long service life.
How is the pump selected and what about energy efficiency?
Selection is made by flow and head with the duty point in the zone of maximum efficiency — at ratings of hundreds of kilowatts every percentage point of efficiency amounts to a noticeable sum over a year. We calculate the duty point from the real system curve and, if required, supply the pump with variable frequency control.
