Frequently asked questions about labelling equipment
What labelling technologies are there?
Self-adhesive labels, cold-glue labels from a reel or from a stack, hot glue for wrap-around labelling, and shrink sleeves. Each technology gives its own appearance, its own consumables cost and its own requirements for the surface of the container.
How do we choose a technology to suit our container and budget?
Self-adhesive labelling is universal, gives the best appearance and quick changeover, but is more expensive in consumables. Cold glue is advantageous on large runs of glass containers. A sleeve is needed where the decoration has to cover a complex shape or the whole bottle. The decision is made on the basis of the production run, the shape of the container and the decoration requirements.
What does the accuracy of label positioning depend on?
On the container orientation system, the stability of conveying, the quality of the servo drives and the sensor settings. For containers with a relief pattern or with a registration mark, orientation by the mark is used — this is critical when the front and back labels have to line up with a feature of the bottle shape.
Can a date be printed and the presence of the label be checked?
Yes. Date and batch coding printers are integrated into the line, as well as inspection systems: presence of the label, its position and skew, code readability. Rejects are automatically removed from the flow without stopping the line.
How long does changeover to a new format take?
It depends on the design: modern machines with quick-change format parts and setting memory are changed over in minutes. If you have many SKUs, this should be built into the technical specification from the outset — it is the changeover time, rather than the rated speed, that most often determines the actual output.
