Four series are already presented as separate cards: ESN / ESH, ESM, ESK / PK, IL. For FTP, SCP, MS and SPM, please send an enquiry — we will select the size to suit your operating points.

What does the EN 733 (DIN 24255) standard mean?

EN 733 (formerly DIN 24255) specifies overall and connection dimensions single-stage centrifugal pumps with a nominal pressure of 10 bar. The standard establishes the shaft axis height, flange dimensions, distance between supports, and type designations.

The practical consequence is singular: a pump from any manufacturer complying with EN 733 becomes a direct replacement for another of the same frame size. The foundation, pipework and coupling remain unchanged. That is precisely why the ESN / ESH and ESM series are designated by frame sizes such as 32-125 or 200-400: the first number is the discharge DN, the second is the nominal impeller diameter.

EN 733 describes neither materials, nor hydraulics, nor allowable nozzle loads. It is a standard of interchangeability, not a process pump standard.

What is the difference between ISO 2858 and EN 733?

ISO 2858 also specifies dimensions, but for pumps chemical and technological industryThe nominal pressure in this standard is higher and the design requirements are stricter. The ESK / PK series is built to ISO 2858.

The difference is visible in the figures of the Boulton Pumps catalogue itself.

Parameter ESN / ESH, ESM (EN 733) ESK / PK (ISO 2858)
Maximum temperature +140 °C +175 °C
Maximum pressure 10 (16) bar 16 (25) bar
Maximum head 105 metres 160 m
Impeller enclosed, open, vortex, duct closed
Target sectors clean and lightly polluted environments chemistry and process manufacturing

Rule of thumb: EN 733 is used for water, irrigation and general water supply. ISO 2858 is used for aggressive and hot media.

⚠️ There is a discrepancy in the manufacturer's sources. The description of the ESK series on its own page calls ISO 2858 onlyThe series catalogue list and the meta description of the same page are called ISO 5199 (2858) and ASME 73.1We are publishing ISO 2858 as confirmed. Compliance with ISO 5199 and ASME B73.1 requires written confirmation from the manufacturer before use in tender documentation.

What materials are Boulton Pumps made from?

The manufacturer claims production "in all materials". The listed range covers both standard cast iron and high-alloy steels.

Material Typical application
Grey cast iron water, lightly contaminated environments
Ductile (nodular) iron increased pressures, ESK and SPM series
Steel general industrial applications
Bronze sea water, SCP and MS series
AISI 316 / 316L food and chemical environments, moderate corrosion
Duplex chlorides, increased strength
Superduplex seawater, high chloride concentration
Hastelloy strong acids and oxidising agents

Material execution can be full or partial. That is, the casing and the impeller are ordered in different alloys when it is economically justified.

Which impellers and mechanical seals are available?

Volute casing series are supplied with four types of impeller. The choice determines what the pump is capable of handling.

Impeller type What is it for?
Closed pure liquids, highest efficiency
Open liquids with impurities and fibres
Vortex liquids with large solid particles
Channel contaminated environments and sludges

The manufacturer claims deep expertise in mechanical seals. Seals are selected according to API piping plans. The plan determines how barrier or flush liquid is supplied to the friction pair. For hot, crystallising or toxic media, it is the API plan that determines the pump's service life, rather than the casing itself.

The SCP series additionally features wear-resistant rings in the casing. Impeller rings are optional. For larger sizes, a double volute is available, which reduces the radial load on the shaft.

Does the Boulton Pumps pump come in an explosion-proof design?

Right. The manufacturer offers an option ATEX certifications for all its pumpsThis applies to all eight series, not individual models.

ATEX is required where the pump is located in an area with a potentially explosive atmosphere. Typical cases: solvents, alcohols, fuels, and organic dust. The equipment category and group are determined by the area classification at your facility. This must be specified in the enquiry along with the duty point.

How to choose a series for your task?

Comparison by limit parameters yields an unambiguous choice in most cases.

Task The series
Direct pump replacement per EN 733 on baseplate ESN / ESH
The same, but compact, without the frame and coupling ESM
Chemistry, temperature over +140 °C, pressure over 16 bar ESK / PK
Thermal oil up to +350 °C FTP
Little space, installation directly into the pipeline IL
Large volumes of water, fire-fighting, water treatment SCP
Head over 160 m, up to 550 m MS
Self-priming, suspended solids, abrasive SPM

For accurate selection, four values are required: the medium, flow rate in m³/h, required head in metres, and temperature. Additionally — viscosity, solids content, and the hazardous area classification.
