There is water, but there isn’t enough: how losses in the irrigation system are ‘eating away’ at your crop yield

In 2026, the issue of irrigation in Ukraine has moved from the category of a “desirable addition” to a strategic necessity. However, an irrigation pumping station by itself still does not guarantee results. The availability of a water source and installed sprinkler machines does not yet mean efficient irrigation. More often than not, the farmer’s main enemy is not drought, but hidden technical losses and the low efficiency of outdated pumping stations.

When the system is running at full capacity, you end up paying twice: first for the electricity used to pump the excess water, and then for the lost harvest caused by uneven irrigation.

Why doesn’t the traditional approach work anymore?

Most irrigation systems in Ukraine today suffer from three ‘ailments’:

Unstable blood pressure. Even a slight drop in pressure in the main pipe disrupts the spray pattern. The result is ‘striped’ irrigation, where one part of the field is waterlogged whilst the other remains dry.

Excessive energy consumption. Older pumping systems operate in an ‘on/off’ mode without frequency control. This causes water hammer and leads to electricity wastage of up to 30–40%.

High total cost of ownership (TCO). Constant repairs and downtime during the peak season cost more than a new energy-efficient pump.

Steiner irrigation pumping station: intelligence in every drop

At Steiner Ukraine, we view irrigation not as a set of pipes, but as a single automated organism. A modern irrigation pumping station must be adaptive.

The technological advantages of our solutions

Variable frequency drive (VFD). The pump adjusts to the system’s actual demand. If one sprinkler is operating instead of three, the speed is automatically reduced. This preserves the equipment’s lifespan and saves you money.

Intelligent control. Remote monitoring via smartphone. You can view water pressure, water flow and energy consumption in real time.

Resistance to corrosive environments. The use of specialised materials, such as stainless steel and special coatings, allows the pumps to handle water from open water bodies without the risk of rapid corrosion of the impellers.

The economics of irrigation: how much are you actually losing?

Let’s consider an example. If just 10% of the design pressure is lost due to the pump not working properly, the sprinkler’s coverage efficiency drops by 15–20%. On a 100-hectare plot, this means that 15–20 hectares will not receive the required amount of water during the critical growth phase.

Modern irrigation is all about maths. We help turn water costs into an investment in yield per hectare.

How an irrigation pumping station reduces losses

System degradation must be stopped today. The use of high-efficiency pumping systems from Steiner makes it possible not just to “pump water,” but to enable precision agriculture. A properly selected irrigation pumping station helps reduce technical losses, stabilize irrigation, and protect crop yields.
