Whey processing on the REDA line turns its components, protein and lactose, into higher value-added products. This reduces the costs of storing, transporting and disposing of whey and the environmental impact.
Steiner Ukraine is the REDA distributor in Ukraine. The common principles of REDA equipment, including UHT configurations and separator design, are described on the page REDA.
Which stages does whey processing consist of?
- Rotary filter removes curd residues. This improves skimming efficiency and extends membrane life.
- Skimming on a high-efficiency separator reduces residual fat to below 0.5%. This protects the membranes and the dryer, and the recovered fat has its own value.
- Reverse osmosis (RO) concentrates milk and whey by removing water.
- Nanofiltration (NF) demineralises and desalts whey by separating minerals and salts.
- Ultrafiltration (UF) standardises protein content to produce WPC and MPC.
What does whey processing give?

| MPC — milk protein concentrate |

| Ingredients |
nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals |
Why skim whey before the membranes?
Skimming to below 0.5% residual fat protects membrane filtration and spray drying. The recovered fat is also used as a separate product.
The rotary filter before the separator removes fine curd particles left after cheese making. For deeper cleaning, REDA offers the RE-P clarifier.
Whey processing: membranes or evaporation?
Membrane technologies are described on the page of membrane filtration. An alternative for concentration is the low temperature evaporator. It gives a higher concentration, requires less strict pre-treatment and does not need membrane replacement.
