Twin-screw pumps: principle of operation, advantages and selection of the optimal model

The twin-screw pump is based on two screws that rotate in opposite directions inside a sealed casing. The liquid is captured by the screws, forming hermetically sealed chambers, and is transported without shear forces and pulsations. Thanks to the special synchronization of the screws, contact between them is eliminated, which reduces wear and ensures a long service life.

Areas of application for twin screw pumps

  • Food industry: They are used for pumping syrups, pastes, creams, yogurts and other viscous or sensitive products without damaging their structure.
  • Pharmaceutical industry: Ensure sterility and accuracy when handling biologicals, solutions, and other sensitive liquids.
  • Cosmetics industry: They are suitable for transporting creams, lotions and gels without bubbles or foam.
  • Chemical industry: Ideal for use with aggressive chemicals, acids, alkalis and liquids with high viscosity.
  • Oil and gas industry: They are used to transport fuel oil, bitumen, oil sludge and other abrasive media.

Features of twin screw pumps

  • Uniform flow without pulsations: The pumps ensure smooth fluid transport, which is critical for accurate dosing and handling of sensitive products.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of liquids: from watery to highly viscous, including suspensions with solid particles.
  • Sterility: They are easily adaptable to sanitary standards and support CIP/SIP systems for automatic cleaning and sterilization without disassembly.
  • Ability to work in both directions: The reversible flow function allows fluid to be transported in both directions, which is important for multifunctional systems.
  • Resistance to aggressive environments: The materials of the body and screws (e.g. AISI 316L stainless steel, polymers) ensure durability even in harsh environments.
  • “Heating shirt": Models for working with viscous products are equipped with a heating system to maintain the temperature required to preserve the properties of the liquid.

How to choose a twin-screw pump?

  • Fluid characteristics: Determine the viscosity, presence of solid particles, aggressiveness, and sensitivity of the product to mechanical stress.
  • Operating parameters: Calculate the required pumping volume, pressure, and temperature of the process medium.
  • Materials: Select the appropriate body and screw materials for the process fluid.
  • Additional features: Consider the need for a heating jacket, reverse flow, or CIP/SIP support.
