What is a Packo ZW pump?<\/h2>\n

ZW is one of Packo's nine lobe pump series. The manufacturer positions it as a pump for the wine industry: gentle and efficient transfer of wine and juice without damaging the fruit components.<\/p>\n

Packo has been operating since 1975, with production located in Diksmuide, Belgium. Since the summer of 2015, the company has been part of the Verder Group. Packo rotary lobe and twin-screw pumps are manufactured in South Korea. The manufacturer reports over 350,000 pumps delivered.<\/p>\n

Why are rotors made of rubber?<\/h2>\n

This is the main design feature of the series. The ZW rotors are heli-lobe, made of FDA-approved EPDM elastomer. A bi-lobe version is optionally available.<\/p>\n

An elastomeric rotor produces two practical consequences.<\/p>\n

The first is gentle product handling. The rubber paddle deforms upon contact with a solid particle rather than crushing it. For must, this means that skins, pips and whole berries pass through the pump without being destroyed. It is precisely because of this that the wine does not pick up excess phenolic compounds during pumping.<\/p>\n

The second is limitation. The elastomer sets the limits: 8 bar of differential pressure, 1,000 cP of viscosity, 120 \u00b0C. By comparison, the Packo ZL and ZLC stainless steel lobe series operate up to 20 bar. In other words, the ZW is chosen not because it is more powerful, but because it is more delicate.<\/p>\n

A rectangular inlet pipe is available for receiving the mash. It expands the flow area and allows the loading of thick mass without bridging above the inlet.<\/p>\n

A positive displacement pump must not be started against a closed isolation valve. The discharge rate does not drop with an increase in backpressure, and the pressure rises until the pipeline is damaged. The manufacturer provides safety and bypass valves for this purpose.<\/p>\n

What hygienic design does the Packo ZW pump have?<\/h2>\n

Parts in product contact are 316L stainless steel. Internal food-grade welds are hand-polished and electropolished to a roughness of 0.8 \u00b5m.<\/p>\n

A roughness of 0.8 \u00b5m is the limit below which product residues do not remain in the surface micro-irregularities. For wine, this is critical: residues on the walls become a source of undesirable microflora during the next batch.<\/p>\n

The design is suitable for CIP cleaning in place. The manufacturer claims there are no dead zones or corners where product can get trapped.<\/p>\n
